Baradene News

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Dudley Storey after 77 truly extraordinary years.

Dudley was the driving force behind the establishment of the sport of rowing at Baradene in 1995 and was the Head Coach of Baradene Rowing until his semi-retirement in 2013.

As a rower, Dudley is one of New Zealand’s all-time greats. A Sacred Heart College alumna, Dudley joining West End Rowing Club in 1955, quickly establishing himself as a fiercely competitive oarsman, winning premier titles in eights and quads over several decades.

Rowing for New Zealand, Dudley competed at two Olympic Games, wining gold with the Coxed Four in Mexico in 1968 and Silver in the Coxless Four in Munich in 1972.

As a team manager, Dudley's enthusiasm for the sport continued.  He was the manager for several New Zealand crews in the 1980’s and was especially involved in the 1984 eights campaign for the Los Angeles Olympics.

It was following his elite sporting career that Baradene was so fortunate to experience the virtues of Dudley as a coach.  He instilled in our Baradene rowers the qualities of discipline, integrity, passion, attitude and anticipation (DIPAA as he called it). And he taught them how to serve, how to be generous with one’s time and experience, and how to be humble. His influence on our girls’ development as young adults is thankfully indelible.

At his farewell function at West End in 2013, Dudley remembered the name of every single Baradene rower there, dozens and dozens of them right back to the first crews in the mid-1990s. And they surely remembered him - with love, respect and gratitude. They will all tell you, Dudley was no ordinary coach.

Dudley dedicated a quarter of his life to helping Baradene girls to grow, both as rowers and as people – he selflessly shared his time, wisdom and his own special character and he asked for nothing in return- in fact he steadfastly refused to be paid. Baradene College and particularly the Baradene Rowing Community are forever thankful and indebted to Dudley for his extraordinary generosity of spirit.

Dudley was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to rowing in 1983. His gold medal-winning 1968 rowing crew was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Paula, Alison, Adrian and Dudley Jnr. Rest in peace Dud.

Football Superstar!
Pictured above is Nadia Olla (Year 12) in action for the New Zealand Under 20 Ferns at the FIFA Women's World Cup in Papua New Guinea (Photo: FIFA via Getty Images).  Nadia received this wonderful write up in the New Zealand Herald....

”New Zealand goalkeeper Nadia Olla put on what must be one of the best performances of her career so far, the highlight being a pair of outstanding saves in quick succession late in the first half to keep the match scoreless at the break”

There is also a wonderful article about Nadia and her success at World cup on the NZ Football website:

"One player with plenty to look forward to is certainly goalkeeper Nadia Olla, who is just 16 but took the field for the entirety of all three matches and, remarkably, is eligible to take part in two more U-20 World Cups.

It’s been a memorable period for the talented teen after she also featured in the New Zealand squad for the recent FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan." ...
