              Welcome to Mathematics and Statistics

At Baradene, we aim to make Mathematics part of everyday thinking and talking. Being at ease with Mathematics is essential in our technological world and there is an increasing need to be able to make sense of and interpret the data and statistics that surround us.

WHAT IS MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS?
Mathematics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in quantities, space, and time. Statistics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in data.  These two disciplines are related but have different ways of thinking and of solving problems. Both equip students with effective means for investigating, interpreting, explaining, and making sense of the world in which they live.

WHY STUDY MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS?
By studying mathematics and statistics, students develop the ability to think creatively, critically, strategically, and logically. They learn to structure and to organise, to carry out procedures flexibly and accurately, to process and communicate information, and to enjoy intellectual challenge.

MATHEMATICS AT BARADENE

During Years 7-10 the mathematics curriculum is based on three strands 1) Numbers and Algebra, 2) Geometry and Measurement and 3) Statistics.

At Year 11 students must do either Mathematics Level 1 or Mathematics for Numeracy unless already completed at Year 10.

Statistics and Calculus are available at Level 2 and 3.  Both subjects are also offered at NCEA scholarship level.
