Travel and Tourism
The Travel and Tourism industry is one of the world’s largest industries. It is larger than agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, finance, construction or telecommunications. It is also one of the world’s most exciting and glamorous industries and has grown significantly over the last 20 years.
There are many different careers open to students in the airline, travel and tourism industry. The Travel and Tourism industry is extremely important to New Zealand. It is one of the main ways our country earns money.
If a student becomes an employee of the tourism industry, it is important they give good customer service in order to give them a good impression of New Zealand. They also need to know about: knowledge, personal presentation, attributes and skills that careers in the Tourism industry may need.
Travel and Tourism is not a University approved subject.
YEAR 12 TRAVEL AND TOURISM
The Year 12 programme is the first part of a two-year course to complete a National Certificate in Tourism. It is a Unit Standard course which offers students the opportunity to gain an industry related qualification.
This qualification has been specifically designed for secondary school students and provides students with an introduction to the tourism industry. It recognises the knowledge and skills required as a base for further training in the tourism industry.
Students study topics such as tourist characteristics and needs, the business of tourism, destination New Zealand, world tourist destinations, and work roles in tourism.
YEAR 13 TRAVEL AND TOURISM
The Year 13 programme is the second part of the two-year course to complete the National Certificate in Tourism. It is a Unit Standard course which offers students the opportunity to gain an industry related qualification.
At Year 13 students study topics such as New Zealand’s position in the business of Tourism, the Pacific Islands, and Australia as a world-wide tourist destination.
